Can you scrap a car without a V5 logbook?

Losing the V5C logbook is one of the most common worries people have about scrapping a car — and it's rarely a problem. You can absolutely scrap a car without it. Here's how.

Yes — a missing logbook doesn't stop you

The V5C makes things tidier, but it isn't essential to scrap a car. A licensed yard can still collect the vehicle, notify the DVLA and issue a Certificate of Destruction without it. What matters is that you're the registered keeper (or have their permission) and can confirm your identity and address.

What we need instead

Without a V5C, we'll usually confirm a few details to make sure the car is genuinely yours to scrap:

  • Your name and address as the registered keeper
  • The registration and, ideally, the make and model
  • Proof of ID and address if requested
  • Anything you do have — an insurance document or old tax reminder helps

Why you should still use a licensed yard

It's tempting to take the easy cash offer when you've no paperwork, but that's exactly when it pays to use a SEPA-licensed ATF. They'll still notify the DVLA so the car comes off your record, and still issue a Certificate of Destruction — protecting you from tax letters and penalties down the line. No paperwork is not a reason to skip the legal route.

Apply for a replacement (optional)

If you'd rather have the logbook first, you can apply to the DVLA for a replacement V5C for a small fee — but for a car you're scrapping anyway, it's usually unnecessary. We can proceed without it.

FAQs

Is it legal to scrap a car with no V5C?

Yes, as long as you're the registered keeper or have permission. A licensed ATF will verify ownership, notify the DVLA and issue a Certificate of Destruction either way.

Will I still get my road tax back?

Yes. Once the DVLA is notified the car is scrapped, the refund is issued automatically to the keeper's address — the logbook isn't required for that.

What if the car isn't in my name?

We'd need the registered keeper's permission. If they've moved or can't be reached, contact us and we'll talk through the options.
