Getting your road tax back when you scrap a car

Good news: when you scrap a car you don't have to fill in a form to get your remaining road tax back. It's refunded automatically — as long as one thing happens. Here's how it works.

The refund is automatic

Vehicle tax can no longer be transferred between owners, so when a car is scrapped the DVLA refunds any full remaining months of tax to the registered keeper automatically. There's no separate claim form. The trigger is simple: the DVLA must be told the car has been taken off the road — which a licensed scrapyard does for you when it issues the Certificate of Destruction.

What you'll get back

You're refunded for each FULL month left on your tax — not part-months. So if you scrap a car halfway through a month, that month isn't refunded. If you pay by Direct Debit, it's cancelled automatically and any overpayment returned.

  • Refund covers full remaining months only
  • Sent to the keeper's name and address on the V5C
  • Direct Debit is cancelled automatically
  • No claim form needed — it's triggered by the DVLA notification

How long it takes

Refund cheques are usually issued within a few weeks of the DVLA being notified. If yours hasn't arrived after about six weeks, check the address on your V5C was correct and contact the DVLA.

The one thing that can go wrong

If you sell the car to an unlicensed operator who doesn't notify the DVLA, the car stays registered to you — so no refund is triggered, and you may keep getting tax reminders. Always use a SEPA-licensed Authorised Treatment Facility that issues a Certificate of Destruction. That's what protects your refund and closes the record.

FAQs

Do I need to claim my road tax refund?

No. Once the DVLA is notified that the car is scrapped, the refund for full remaining months is issued automatically to the registered keeper — no form required.

How long does the tax refund take?

Usually a few weeks from the DVLA notification. If nothing arrives within about six weeks, check the address on your V5C and contact the DVLA.

Will I get a refund if I scrap mid-month?

Only full remaining months are refunded, so the current part-month isn't included. Scrapping just after a new month starts loses you the least.
