What documents do you need to scrap a car?

Scrapping a car needs surprisingly little paperwork — and you can usually proceed even if some of it is missing. Here's the simple checklist.

The short checklist

To make scrapping quick and tidy, have these ready:

  • Your V5C logbook (registration certificate) — ideally, but not essential.
  • Proof of identity and address — sometimes asked for, to confirm you're the keeper.
  • Your bank details — so we can pay you by transfer on collection.
  • Anything else to hand — an old MOT or insurance document helps if the V5C is lost.

What the V5C does

The V5C proves who the registered keeper is and is used to notify the DVLA that the car has been scrapped. You hand the main part to the licensed yard and keep the smaller 'sell/transfer' section for your records. Never give away the whole logbook without keeping your slip.

No logbook? You can still scrap it

A missing V5C doesn't stop you. A licensed yard can still collect the car, notify the DVLA and issue a Certificate of Destruction — it just verifies your ownership another way (your name, address and ID). You can apply to the DVLA for a replacement V5C first if you'd prefer, but for a car you're scrapping it's usually unnecessary.

What you don't need

You don't need an MOT, you don't need to SORN the car, and you don't need to tax it. None of those matter when a car is being scrapped — the Certificate of Destruction and DVLA notification cover everything.

FAQs

Do I need the V5C to scrap my car?

It helps but isn't essential. A licensed yard can scrap the car without it by verifying your ownership another way, and will still notify the DVLA and issue a Certificate of Destruction.

Do I need an MOT to scrap a car?

No. An expired or failed MOT makes no difference — the car is being recycled, not driven.

What if the car is registered to someone else?

We'd need the registered keeper's permission. If they can't be reached, get in touch and we'll talk through the options.
